Planning for and choosing the clothing for a family portrait is critical. When decorating a home the major concern is to coordinate the colors and tones of the walls, drapes, and furniture. Similar coordination is necessary when selecting clothing for a family portrait. Choose clothing in the same tonal ranges so that no single member of the family stands out because the clothing is too light, or bright as compared to the rest of the group.

Don't choose prints, patterns, stripes, floral or wild geometric patterns for your shirts. Simple, solid colored, long sleeve shirts are the best. Coordinate the pants also. All wear jeans or khaki or a dark color like black. Whichever you choose, everyone needs to wear that color. Don't forget about your shoes. Black or brown work best. No white tennis shoes!
